"In search of the Malaysian Type"

What keeps me motivated as a type designer are these questions in mind: What is the Malaysian type? How do we define Malaysian typography? Is there actually a Malaysian type? Coming from a multi-racial and multi-cultural country, how does the environment shape the local typographic landscape? Sueh Li will share her journey in searching for the Malaysian type.

"Vernacular Typecooker"

Vernacular signage has a way of portraying a city’s typographic landscape, preserving a sense of place and identity. Unfortunately, they are slowly being replaced by homogenised signs that threaten to erase local culture and history. If a (type) designer has the chance to reinterpret it, how will it influence a city’s typographic
landscape?

In this workshop, we will explore and rework found signage via vernacular typecooker, with a given framework. Vernacular Typecooker was inspired by TypeCooker™, a tool that was invented by Erik van Blokland to generate random parameters for type drawing exercises.
