“Letters on a shirt.”

One of the universal languages of the world is football, spoken in virtually every country in the world. Every four years the World Cup is one of the most anticipated and watched events bringing people together to support their countries. One of the most interesting details of the game are the kits. They represent a nation, but also the fashions of the time and the technical aspects of clothing. Each of the large sporting companies each try to make their designs as attractive as possible, to gain maximum distinction, but also commercial success.

Since the middle of the twentieth century, numbers, and later the names of the players have appeared on the shirts. These represent an interesting challenge to the designer, for they must reflect the design of the shirt, but also FIFA’s regulations, as well as being legible to both fans and to officials.

Since 2006 Paul Barnes has been designed numbers used by both Puma and Umbro, which have been seen at all of the major football events; the World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations & European Championship, as well as other important sporting events, such as the Olympics. He will talk about the challenges of designing letters that need to fulfil both aesthetic and functional criteria.
